Indian Navy to decommission INS Nishank & INS Akshay this week

New Delhi: After 32 years of glorious service to the nation Indian Naval Ships, INS Nishank and INS Akshay will be decommissioned from the Indian Navy on Friday, June 03, 2022. The Indian Navy in a tweet said, "a glorious era will come to an end with the decommissioning of #INSNishank (K43) and #INSAkshay (P35). The two ships will be decommissioned after 32 years of glorious service in a solemn ceremony at Naval Dockyard #Mumbai."

INS Akshay (P35) is an Abhay class corvette, currently in service with the Indian Navy. It was commissioned on 10 December 1990. She is manned by a crew of 7 officers and about 90 sailors. Indian Naval Ship Nishank, a Veer Class Missile Corvette, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 12 September 1989.

It has a displacement of 500 tonnes, a length of 56 metres, a beam of 10 metres and is capable of speed in excess of 35 knots.

The ship is manned by a crew of seven officers and 90 sailors and is equipped with an array of weapons and sensors, which include surface to surface missiles, medium and short-range guns and chaff launchers. This enables the ship to perform a wide variety of roles including coastal patrol, maritime surveillance and surface warfare.
