General MM Naravane retires after 42 years of distinguished service

New Delhi: The Chief of the Army Staff General MM Naravane today retired after serving the Indian Army for more than four decades. He was presented a Ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block lawns on the occasion of relinquishing the appointment of the Chief of the Army Staff.

General Naravane also laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in a solemn ceremony to honour the Bravehearts.

Later General Karavane along with his wife Veena Naravane called on President Ram Nath Kovind and First Lady Savita Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the outgoing Army Chief and wished him for his future endeavours.

In a tweet, he said, "Had a wonderful meeting with the Army Chief, General MM Naravane, who is going to retire today after serving the nation for 42 years. His contributions as a military leader has strengthened India's defence capabilities and preparedness. I wish him success in his future endeavours."

Gen Naravane belongs to a military family and his father was also an armed force officer. He was commissioned into the 7th Battalion, the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, in June 1980.

During his long and distinguished career of 42 years, he served in many roles. He commanded a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Kashmir, served in the Assam Rifles and has been part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka during 'Operation Pawan'.
