New Delhi: The Indian Army has unveiled a new combat uniform that is comfortable, climate-friendly and features a digital camouflage pattern. The new uniform is quite similar to the digital pattern like the troopers of the US Army use. A contingent of commandos of the Parachute Regiment, wearing the new uniforms, took part in the Army Day parade On January 15, Saturday. The uniform, which features a mix of colours including olive and earthen, has been designed taking into considerations aspects like areas of deployment of the troops and climatic conditions in which they operate.

The new uniform has been designed after analysing the combat uniforms of armies of various other countries. The new uniform has been designed by a team of eight students and professors from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) according to the specifications were provided by the Indian Army, officers speaking to Defence Watch said. This uniform is more comfortable and it would be worn in all types of terrains, the officials said. The digital disruptive pattern is designed with help of computer aid, they added.

The key features of the Indian Army's new combat uniform are:

  • The fabric of the new combat uniform is breathable, lighter, stronger and easy to maintain
  • It has a unique digital camouflage pattern
  • The jacket has angular top pockets and lower pockets have a vertical opening
  • Trousers have waist adjustment with elastic and button
  • Trousers have a double layer at the groin area
  • There is a knife pleat at the back of the jacket

The new uniform will not require 'tuck-in'

The shirt in the new uniform does not have to be tucked in the trouser, as reported by Defence Watch in January 04 report. The shirt in the old uniform had to be tucked in. The sources said the new uniforms would not be available in the open market.
