New Delhi: The Army is set to launch a technology-based battlefield surveillance system named 'Project Sanjay' in June next month. Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is the project integrator.

The advanced system will integrate multiple sensors, satellite imagery and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) feed onto a common picture that will be available to the Commanders on the ground decision-makers in the Army headquarters.

As per the sources, the battlefield surveillance system, has undergone extensive validation tests in plains, desert and mountainous terrain.

They said, "BEL has met the Army's aspirations in entirety. Its effort has been entirely acceptable and over 60 surveillance centres for field formations will be ready by December 2025."

"All borders will be covered by December 2025. The project will integrate thousands of surveillance systems to provide integrated pictures to Commanders at all levels," they added.

It entails creation of centres starting from the brigade level and all sensors will be operationalised in one go. "Project Sanjay" integrates ground-based sensors, UAV feed and satellite data that is needed for tactical battle and to look at depth areas that are 200 km beyond the boundaries.

Army Chief Manoj Pande, during an interaction at an event held here recently, spoke about the transformation steps taken by the Army going forward, adding that it has laid down five domains in which this transformation will take place in the future.

"We have taken a number of transformation initiatives so that we become a more modern, more technology-driven, self-reliant and a battle-worthy force to be able to not only carry out our mandate more effectively, but also to be able to meet future security challenges in a more effective manner," he said.
