New Delhi: Lt Gen Pratik Sharma has taken over as the General Officer Commanding of Kharga Corps from Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani, the Indian Army said today.

It said, "On assuming command, the General Officer paid tributes to the #Bravehearts at #VijaySmarak & exhorted All Ranks to continue working with zeal & fervour."

II Corps, also known as Kharga Corps is based in Ambala and comes under the Western Command. The kharga is the formation sign.

The Corps was raised on October 7, 1971, by Lt Gen T N Raina, (later Chief of Army Staff) at Krishna Nagar in West Bengal and saw action two months later in December. During the liberation war of Bangladesh, it captured the important towns of Khulna, Jessore, Jhenida, Magura and Faridpur and also the area between the rivers Ganga and Padma.

Later, the Corps was shifted to the Western Theatre where it was initially located at Chandimandir till 1984 and later moved to its present location in Ambala in January 1985
