New Delhi: Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande on Tuesday took over as Colonel of the Regiment of the 61st Cavalry. The Indian Army said that Gen Pande is the 23rd Army Chief to take over Colonelcy of the mounted Cavalry Regiment. Gen Pande was presented with the regimental sword, lance and accoutrements of the Regiment in a brief ceremony on Tuesday by Commandant and Risaldar Major of 61 Cavalry.
According to the Indian Army, the 61st Cavalry holds the unique distinction of being the only horsed cavalry unit and is known the world over for its contribution to the Equestrian sport.
After independence, when the erstwhile princely states disintegrated, the 61 Cavalry continued to carry the torch of Indian polo. The regiment has won almost all polo tournaments in the country.
The Regiment has 273 horses and other meagre resources to fulfil all duties operational, ceremonial and sporting with distinction and purpose. 61 Cavalry has to its credit one Padma Shri, Ten Arjuna Awards, 11 Asian Games Medal and several representations in Polo World Cup & Asian Games amongst numerous laurels won for the country and Army in the international and national arena.
The 61st Cavalry has the honour to lead the Republic day and Army Day Parades.
