New Delhi: In a big initiative on the occasion of upcoming World Environment Day, 2023, Indian Army has decided to convert Narengi Military Station in Guwahati to a completely renewable-based military station. 

As part of the effort, the Indian army has installed a solar energy plant. It has a capacity of 1 MW (Mega Watt) at the Narengi military station to provide clean energy to the army.

The army official said, the plan is to extend the solar energy plant upto 3 MW capacity. They further said that Make in India solar panels have been used in its first green solar energy plant.

The army is looking for a durable power supply in high altitudes to enhance the living conditions of its personnel. They also installed a system of Real-Time Data Acquisition and Required Parameter Monitoring for analysis of Power Generation each day, incorporating weather parameter sensors like wind direction sensor, wind speed sensor, solar radiation sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor and barometer pressure sensor.

Indian Army has taken a number of initiatives to be green in recent time.

A couple of months back, in March 2023, NTPC REL signed an MoU with Indian Army for setting up Green Hydrogen Projects in its establishments on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model. The move aims to reduce complex logistics, dependence on fossil fuels and to accelerate decarbonization. 

Indian Army has also inaugurated the first green solar energy plant in Sikkim. uses vanadium-based battery technology, was built at an altitude of 16000 ft. in the northern part of the state and has a capacity of 56 KVA.
