New Delhi: The Defence Public Sector Undertaking Gliders India Limited (GIL) has got its first export order in the Parachute business. The company has achieved this feat within six months of its inception, GIL said in an official statement issued Tuesday.

DRDO, which has transferred the technology of advanced Brake Parachutes to the Kanpur based DPSU, has termed the export order for advanced Brake Parachutes, as a momentous moment for Indian Industry.

Brake Parachutes have been designed to provide adequate deceleration to fighter aircraft of different weight classes and to stop them within specified landing speeds in both normal and emergency conditions.

Over two thousand such parachutes developed for Su-30MKI have already been supplied for defence applications.

Gliders India Limited (GIL) is a defence PSU formed after the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board. Ordnance Parachute Factory is the only unit under Gliders India limited was established in the year 1941 at Kanpur (UP), India. It started as a repair unit of Man Carrying Parachutes & thereafter commenced & established production of Supply Drop Parachutes & Military Uniforms in 1962. In 1970 production of personnel parachutes i.e. PTR-M & PTR-R was established.

In 1971 production of floats for KM Bridge and inflatable boats was also established.
