First woman officer completes 100 days at Siachen

New Delhi: Captain Shiva Chouhan of  Fire and Fury Sappers has successfully completed 100 days at Siachen, the world's highest battlefield in unforgiving weather conditions and freezing winter temperatures. 

The Fire & Fury Corps informed this in a tweet. 

The team of Sappers led by Capt Shiva Chouhan is responsible for numerous combat engineering tasks. 

In Jan 2023, she became the first Woman Officer to be deployed in a combat role at Siachen Glacier.  Before her deployment, Chouhan was put through a rigorous one-month training at the Siachen Battle School alongside other officers of the Indian Army.

Siachen Glacier is at northern-most of India-Pakistan boundary and is not covered in the demarcations of border. It is also the highest battleground on Earth, with temperatures reaching as low as -50 degrees Celsius.  In 1984, India and Pakistan fought on the glacier. 

In Operation Meghdoot, India was able to take control of strategic heights.

Captain Shiva hails from Rajasthan. At the age of 11, she lost her father, and her mother took care of her studies. She did her schooling from Udaipur. From her childhood, Chauhan was motivated to join the Indian armed forces.

She completed her training at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai and was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment in May 202

She belongs to the Bengal Sappers of the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army. The Corps has three divisions: the Bombay Sappers, the Bengal Sappers, and the Madras Sappers. The Bengal Engineering Group, of which Chauhan is a part, is commonly referred to as the Bengal Sappers (BEG).
