New Delhi: Indian Army organised a special Commemorative Seminar to celebrate 75 years of United Nations peacekeeping at Manekshaw Centre, Delhi on June 13, 2023.

Speaking on the occasion, defence minister Rajnath Singh conveyed deepest gratitude to all UN peacekeepers for their unwavering commitment, professionalism & sacrifices.

The minister called for innovative approaches and enhanced cooperation among responsible nations to ensure the safety & effectiveness of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers who are deployed in violence-hit regions to maintain stability, prevent conflicts and facilitate restoration of peace.

He reiterated the necessity to make the UN decision making bodies, including the Security Council (UNSC), more reflective of demographic realities of the world.

"When India, the most populous nation, does not find a seat as a permanent member of the UNSC, it tends to undermine the moral legitimacy of the UN.  Therefore, the time has come for making the UN bodies more democratic and representative of the current realities of our age," he said.

The minister also unveiled a pictorial compilation of India's rich and remarkable peacekeeping journey.

General Anil Chauhan, CDS and General Manoj Pande, COAS also attended the seminar. The Army Chief highlighted the contribution made by India to the cause of UN Peacekeeping.

He also pointed out the vitality of the UN Peacekeeping amidst the new & complex security challenges and the readiness of Indian Army to fulfil India's responsibility & commitment to the UN, in close partnership with fellow states.

In addition, Mr Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator in India, Foreign Service Attachés and other senior officers from the Ministry of Defence & Ministry of External Affairs attended the commemorative event.

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed on May 29 every year to honour the professionalism, dedication & courage of those serving in UN peacekeeping operations and remember those who have laid down their lives in the cause of peace.
