Indian Air Force and Indian Navy tie up with DRDO to acquire CHAFF technology

New Delhi: In a major boost to indigenous defence capabilities, the Indian Air Force and  Indian Navy have tied up with the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) to acquire CHAFF technology to protect their aircrafts and warships from any missile attack.

Chaff is a critical defence technology, prepared by DRDO, to protect fighter aircraft and warships from hostile radar threats, by creating a metal particle cloud near the warship and deflects the missiles from it

India is the second country after the United States to develop this technology.

Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur developed the advanced Chaff material and chaff cartridge-118/I in collaboration with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune.

After a successfully extensive user trial, the IAF assessed the performance of indigenous chaff cartridge-118/I satisfactory and started the process of induction into Indian Air Force.
