New Delhi: Chief of the Army Staff General MM Naravane has presented the prestigious 'President's Colours' to four units of the Parachute Regiment in Bengaluru. The battalions which were presented the President's Colours are 11 Para (Special Force), 21 Para (Special Force), 23 Para and 29 Para.

Speaking on the occasion, General Naravane lauded the bravery, sacrifice and traditions of the Parachute Regiment.

Parachute Regiment, which is popularly known as Para or Maroon Berets, is a highly trained airborne regiment of the Indian Army. The special forces come under the Combat Arm – Infantry.

The Regiment and its battalions have in their kitty till date 32 Chief of the Army Staff unit citations, along with 8 Ashoka Chakra, 14 Maha Vir Chakra, 22 Kirti Chakra, 63 Vir Chakra, 116 Shaurya Chakra and 601 Sena Medals for their yeomen service, valour and gallantry.

The 11 Para Special Force was raised in 2011 as a new Special Forces, whereas 21 Para Special Force was raised in 1985 as 21st Battalion of Maratha Light Infantry and was converted to Special Force in 1996. They specialize in Jungle Warfare and Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorism operations.

President's colours, also known as Nishan, is one of the greatest honours awarded to a battalion in recognition of exceptional service rendered by it to the nation, both during the war and in peace.

The Colour Presentation Ceremony was held at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre in Bengaluru. The presentation was preceded by a multi-faith prayer and was attended by senior officials of the armed forces.
